This club builds and races model skipjacks (traditional oyster boats of the Chesapeake Bay). The models are scratch built and one design made from plans developed by Peper Langley of the Solomons Island Model Boat club. The models are of good size with an overall length of 48" on deck and a weight of 22 lbs. Races are conducted every other Sunday through the summer with the exception of the month of August.
Plan sets (4 sheets) and lead keels (~9 pounds) are available from the
Commodore. Skips are built upside down on a "building board" which allows
the unusual shaped hull to be produced. The sides are very flat with hard
chines which allows sheet on frame construction. These models can easily
be built by anyone with average wood working skills.
